Mark Jackson arrived at Lion City Sailors at a moment no coach would wish for: right after Jesús Casas was dismissed just days before the season opener. The reason cited in regional media was that Casas had publicly courted the then-vacant South Korea national-team job. But this is where I want to pause. The only thing Ilhan's interview reveals about Jackson's methodology is two words: "high intensity." He says Jackson's sessions are very good, high intensity, and players will feel sharp. That describes fitness and preparation, not tactical structure. And for a team playing in a domestic league where opponents routinely park the bus, intensity alone does not solve the problem of breaking down a low block.

I watched six matches back, and then I dared to say what 96 percent of experts will not: the problem for Lion City Sailors this season is not how many goals they score, but how they drop points. The 2-2 draw with Hougang United is the real test. That was a match they were expected to win comfortably, they led by two goals, and then let the opposition equalise. The 1-1 draw with BG Pathum United in the AFC Champions League Two is easier to accept, because the opponent is a strong Thai side, and regional media even noted that BG Pathum looked the likelier team to find a late winner.

This tells us two things. First, Jackson's defence held up under sustained pressure against a quality opponent — a positive signal for the new defensive block. Second, the team's game management remains a big question mark, and that question can only be answered after seven or eight matches, not three.

The double-decker bus has failed brakes, but the steering was already off beforehand. The timing of Casas' dismissal just before the opener, the appointment of an interim within days, then a permanent coach taking over — that sequence of decisions pushed Lion City Sailors into the season in a non-optimal state. Ilhan himself admits the team still needs time to gel under the new coach.

This is the point I believe the crowd misses. When a club wins two consecutive doubles and signs a big name, the story told is a story about strength. But the real story is a story about transition. A coach who arrived late, a squad still gelling, and an attacking system that currently has only one reliable spearhead.

That is also when I think of Ilhan and Jackson's story at Buriram United. In Thailand, Ilhan was in a group competing for a starting spot and did not get as many minutes as he would have liked. Now he arrives in Singapore, reunites with exactly that coach, and scores both goals in the season's first competitive match. It is a beautiful start. But if Jackson repeats his Buriram selection pattern — preferring the established option once the squad is fully available — Ilhan will fall into a familiar situation.

And a player scoring all of his team's goals in the only match where the team scored more than once, statistically speaking, tells a simple truth: no second goalscoring source has emerged. If Ilhan is absent for national-team duty, injury, or suspension, this club has not shown any proven backup option.

There is a warm story that the interview devotes nearly a quarter of its space to: the brotherly relationship between Ilhan and Chanathip Songkrasin, the Thailand captain. Ilhan calls Chanathip a "big-brother figure" who always checks up on him and encourages him. Emotionally, that is a lovely detail. Professionally, it says nothing about whether Lion City Sailors can break down domestic opponents' low blocks — and that is the question that decides championships.

The stadium lights go out, and the young player's story begins to shine. But with 27 years writing about football, I have learned one thing: the light of a brace in the opening match can blur the cracks that will show within a few more rounds. Everyone remembers Ilhan's two goals. Very few remember that his club just dropped two points from a two-goal lead, against a side rated lower.

Lion City Sailors' story this season is not about whether they keep Ilhan, or whether they win another double.
